Stability AI Launches Membership Model to Expand Commercial Use of Generative AI

In a significant move for the generative AI landscape, Stability AI, the company known for its stable diffusion text-to-image generation models, has unveiled a new membership program aimed at standardizing the commercial use of its AI models.

Since its inception in 2019, Stability AI has emerged as a front-runner in the AI sector, gaining momentum with a $101 million funding round in 2022. The company’s repertoire of AI models has been widely accessible to researchers and the public, often free of charge.

The latest shift to a membership-based model is designed to facilitate broader enterprise deployment and enable other companies to create businesses leveraging Stability AI’s technology. The new membership tiers include a free non-commercial personal and research use tier, a professional tier at $20 a month, and a custom-priced enterprise tier for larger organizations.

Emad Mostaque, founder and CEO of Stability AI, assured that in line with the company’s ethos, the models would remain open. “The code and weights will continue to be available for all tiers of our membership including commercial and non-commercial usage,” Mostaque told VentureBeat, drawing parallels with the Meta Llama model’s approach.

Stability AI’s own Clipdrop site previously allowed users to engage with models for general consumer use. However, with the new membership structure, Mostaque clarified that while existing usage remains unaffected, new users would require a membership for both commercial and non-commercial purposes.

In addition to early access to model releases, free personal users will enjoy invitations to public forums and opportunities to be featured on Stability AI channels. Mostaque anticipates that the membership will provide significant value even for non-paying members.

Commercial entities have shown considerable interest in the new membership program, with Mostaque citing a strong uptake from funded startups and large companies. The broad suite of models from Stability AI offers an appealing solution as generative AI becomes increasingly integrated into various business sectors.

Stability AI isn’t resting on its laurels with the launch of the membership model; the company continues to innovate with new model releases. In 2023 alone, they have introduced an array of new models including SDXL for high-end text-to-image creation, SDXL Turbo for enhanced speed, StableLM Zephyr 3B for text content generation, Stable Audio, Stable Video, StableCode, and most recently the Stable Zero123 for 3D image creation.

As we close out 2023, which was marked as the year of language models, Mostaque hints that 2024 could become the year of generative media. Stability AI’s ambitious rollout continues to cement its position as an industry leader in generative AI technology.
