Ai Chatgpt Outshines Expert Surgeon In Rhinoplasty Consultations

Artificial intelligence continues to advance and make significant strides in various fields, and a recent study has demonstrated its potential in the realm of medical consultations. In a groundbreaking comparison, ChatGPT, an AI in the form of a chatbot, outperformed an expert rhinoplasty surgeon in answering patient questions related to nasal surgery.

The study, published in Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine, revealed that ChatGPT received significantly higher accuracy, completeness, and overall quality ratings. Evaluators overwhelmingly preferred the AI over physician responses in 80.95% of cases.

The research team, comprised of experts such as Kay Durairaj, MD, Omer Baker, Dario Bertossi, MD, Steven Dayan, MD, Kian Karimi, MD, Roy Kim, MD, Sam Most, MD, Enrico Robotti, MD, and Frand Rosengaus, MD, compared the effectiveness of ChatGPT with that of an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon. Their findings raise interesting questions about the role of artificial intelligence in medical consultations.

ChatGPT demonstrated remarkable abilities in responding to a wide range of patient questions, including inquiries about non-surgical treatment options and postoperative care instructions. In fact, the AI performed at or above the level of the expert surgeon in most instances.

The emergence of online tools like ChatGPT has made artificial intelligence and large language models more accessible to the public. However, researchers and medical professionals emphasize the need for responsible and careful use of these technologies. While it is impressive to witness AI-generated content edited in the style of renowned authors like Hemingway or Dostoevsky, it is essential to remain vigilant of occasional inaccuracies and counsel patients accordingly.

Travis T. Tollefson, MD, MPH, Editor-in-Chief of Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine at the University of California, Davis, expressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of patient education and consultation practices. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into healthcare, it is crucial to ensure that patients receive accurate and reliable information.

The study’s findings shed light on the potential of AI-driven tools in improving patient care and medical consultations. While the expertise of human surgeons remains invaluable, artificial intelligence can enhance the healthcare landscape, providing patients with comprehensive and prompt responses to their queries.

As technology continues evolving, medical professionals and the larger medical community must adapt to these innovations. By embracing the responsible use of AI, physicians can harness its capabilities to augment their expertise and provide even better care to their patients.
